The city of Abilene, TX is located about two hours from the Midland and Lubbock areas. Like many Texas cities, it was established as a stock shipping point on the Texas and Pacific Railway. The land was being sold off and the population of the area began to grow. By 1940, Abilene raised enough money to purchase land to establish Camp Barkeley, a U.S. Army base. It was home to around 60,000 men, but after WWII, the base closed. Veterans began opening businesses in the area and Dyess Air Force Base was built, becoming the city’s largest employer.
